With a well-deserved break after the ‘Devil’s in the Detail’ album, Lynx returns with a fresh take on his sound. Locked on the Low is an exciting and daring collaboration with Sydney based singer songwriter, Naomi Pryor, whose voice has been compared to the amazing Sinead o’Connor & Kate Bush. The collaboration has stepped Lynx out of his normal position as a groundbreaking Drum and Bass artist, and gives a glimpse of the future – breaking down the boundaries of tempo and genre. Whilst retaining his unique sound, moving forward will see a considered focus towards radio friendly tracks…. which can really be heard in Locked On The Low.

Already with airplay from BBC Radio 1 djs Benga & Skream, described by them as: ‘A stunningly beautiful track that makes you feel you’re in a festival at 5 in the morning’. No doubt we’ll be hearing this trickle through the speakers soon!

Gantz, aka Emir, is 23 and from Istanbul, Turkey. He’s been playing around with production for about 4 or 5 years but in the last year or so he’s being taking it more seriously and is now starting to get releases. He’s been making music with instruments since he was 13 and so, he says, music production “just started happening naturally.” He started making tunes and sending them out to his to his mates. “Then i was introduced to dubstep, which led me to where I am now.”

I asked him how he’d describe his music and he told me he has “a hard time looking at my music from a different perspective and judge it and all that when someone asks something like this, but i can say it is obviousy related to the current dubstep scene in the UK. It is always percussive. I like percussive stuff.”

Gantz uses Logic Pro 9 and a couple of software synths. When asked about his influences he told me he gets influenced by “different moods”. He went on to explain that “when you listen to a tune and it gets you in a certain mood , doesn’t matter wherever you are in the world, that is something i am very interested in. I also enjoy the musical compositions in general. I think they are unique in the way that they use “time” as an element too. I am influenced by how you can use time and space in a tune to express yourself in million different ways. How you can express yourself by not using a sound instead of using it where the listener thought you would  Those kind of micro expressions excite me in a tune. Oh yes and Shackleton.”

Gantz released an EP called No Love on Fent Plates a while ago (check out our interview with them here ). As well the the aforementioned tune ‘Choke’, he will be releasing another tune on Innamind very soon. On top of this he has forthcoming tunes on SUB LAB and TRIBE12 sometime this year.

G-A and Concept go into producing in similar ways, both started experimenting with music programs when they were just youts and both studied music tech at a specialist college in Nottingham called Confetti. G-A is now in the final year of a degree in sound engineering. As you can imagine, music has been a big part of both their lives for the past five years or so.

Congi use a range of software: “The first set of songs we made together were on Cubase before moving to Reason for a change. We tend to cross between the two when we feel we’re tired of either platform. We also occasionally use Fruity Loops.” In terms of influences G-A finds inspiration in fresh material from new producers and Nottingham’s thriving scene. Concept on the other hand draws influence from his genre-spanning vinyl collection which he says is one of his most important possessions.

Unsigned Dubs by cauze

Cauze has been producing for three years, he’s a big fan of that deep dark minimal dubstep that we love and has been listening to underground radio for a long time. His appreciation for low frequency bass comes through in his production, for which he uses Logic 9 and FL studio. He draws a lot of influence from labels such as Chestplate, Osiris, DMZ and Hench. As well as artists such as Sleeper, Perverse and Youngsta.
